ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Terri Yacovelli was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. She holds a Masters of Liberal Arts degree from McDaniel College in Maryland and earned an undergraduate degree from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Her work has been included in solo and juried exhibits across the east coast in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and New York. Recent work has been featured in the International Encaustic Artists juried exhibition held at the San Luis-Obispo Museum of Art, California.
Although trained as a traditional oil painter, Ms. Yacovelli now paints with a blowtorch. Encaustic wax painting is a hot medium created from oil paint and bees wax. Each layer of the wax is fused to the previous layer using a blowtorch. The wax can be poured or used in a painterly manner. It can be stamped and carved into, and layers can be scraped away to reveal previous layers and marks. Working through the stages of different cooling temperatures can build interesting texture and surface treatment. The wax quite often has a will of its own, forcing the artist to abandon preconceived notions and give in to the medium and moment.
Ms. Yacovelli is currently a studio art teacher and serves as an adjunct professor of art at York College of Pennsylvania. An avid traveler and gardener, she resides in York Pennsylvania with her family.
